Why local libraries matter and the value of partnerships in Western Australia’s public library network

In my role as Chair of the Library Board of Western Australia, I spoke recently at the WA local government association’s annual conference, presenting on local libraries. In this speech, I emphasise the social and economic benefit of libraries, as well as the impact on communities if they are without library services. This speech recognises the 60 years of partnership between state and local government and canvasses the importance, in future, of this partnership as the need for libraries increases, even as the form of library services might change.
