Career Summary
Academic career
In 2013 I commence work as Head of School at Deakin University’s School of Communication and Creative Arts. Prior to this time, I worked at Curtin University (1994-2012), commencing as a lecturer in the School of Social Sciences and Asian Languages, after short–term positions at Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University and University of Western Australia (1991–1993). In 2000 I moved from Social Sciences to the newly formed School of Media and Information, now titled the School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1997, to Associate Professor in 2001 and to Professor in 2010. I have served as Associate Head of School, Media and Information and as Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Humanities. I established the Internet Studies program in 2000 and served as its coordinator until 2008. In that year the area was formally recognised as the Department of Internet Studies and I became its foundation Head of Department.
Career highlights
I am a Teaching Fellow of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council and a winner of an Australian Award for University Teaching. In 2007 I was invited to conduct a national lecture tour for the Australian Computing Society. I served for nearly a decade on the Library Board of Western Australia, being its chair from 2009-2012. I have also served on the Executive of the Association of Internet Researchers, including two years as President, and am a life member of the association.
Research and scholarship
Over the past twenty years as an academic and researcher, I have written two monographs, edited six books and journal special issues, written or co-written 23 scholarly journal articles and nine chapters, and published 13 conference papers in proceedings. I have presented more than 50 conference papers, including 8 invited keynote addresses and 5 invited conference papers. I have also delivered many workshops, primarily on teaching and learning innovation, either at conferences or by invitation. I have supervised or co-supervised 15 doctoral students to successful completion and am a member of several international academic journals’ advisory or editorial boards.
